Favorite Outdoor Sport

Today we have a puzzle. The postcard above comes with no information other than the caption on the front. Perhaps a solar eclipse was imminent or a display of alligator wrestling. They could be looking forward to a demonstration of tree-cycling or an enthralling trouser-pressing contest. The second image in this series comes from Catalina Island. The mystery here is not so much what they’re looking at (it’s a glass bottomed boat) but why is everyone wearing a hat?

This post is an enormous disappointment from a blog which previously had shown great sensitivity and the ability to see beauty in many forms. As a Southerner by birth, I can tell you that lynching was never seen as a "sport" in this country. I am shocked and saddened to read such callous and flippant remarks from one who had previously shown a good deal of wisdom and compassion.

If these are "confederates" enjoying a lynching, why does the first car have Ohio license plates?

Fair comment. I dashed this off without thinking of the implications. I apologise for giving offence. It was wrong to treat this sensitive subject in such a casual way. I'm tempted to withdraw the post but perhaps it should stand, together with your comments, as evidence of a very poor error of judgement.

On reflection, this post has been revised in the light of the above comments.
